Our environment is in crisis. Too many of our iconic species are facing extinction, pollution, and deforestation. Corporate greed is pushing our natural world to the brink of collapse.
Right before calling the election, the Albanese Labor government watered down our environment laws. Only the Greens can be trusted to protect our environment and native wildlife.
When the Greens were last in balance of power, we worked with the government to cut pollution, secure world-leading climate laws and invest billions in clean energy.
The Greens have already:
- Stopped Labor’s gas laws that would have expanded offshore gas
- Finally made unconventional gas fracking subject to federal environmental assessment
- Stopped half of all new coal and gas projects in the pipeline by strengthening climate laws
- Secured $1.7 billion for households and businesses to transition to clean energy
- Secured an extra 450 billion litres of environmental water for the Murray Darling Basin
- Scrapped dodgy “carbon offset” greenwashing in the federal nature repair market
- Made sure government investment funds can’t invest in fossil fuel projects anywhere in the world
Next we will:
- End native forest logging and save koalas from extinction
- Bring in an Environment Protection Authority with teeth
- Stop approving new coal and gas mines and end the billions in handouts to fossil fuel companies
- Lower power bills by expanding publicly-owned renewable power
- Make it easier for renters, homeowners and businesses to get rooftop solar and batteries
- Protect public green space from inappropriate commercial development
- Ban all types of PFAS “forever chemicals” in consumer packaging, agrichemicals, and cosmetics
- Legislate a climate trigger make the environment minister to consider a project’s climate impacts
- Bring in nationally consistent regulations on damaging single-use plastics
